The United States wants to see fair elections in Bangladesh: Peter Haas
US Ambassador to Dhaka Peter Haas has said that the people of Bangladesh must come forward to make the upcoming parliamentary elections fair. The United States wants to see fair and internationally acceptable elections in Bangladesh.
Peter Haas added that the Election Commission is playing an important role. It is important to maintain their neutrality in the interest of conducting elections. Although not official, the election process that has already started in Bangladesh can be seen by looking at the newspaper.
Therefore, from now on (in terms of elections), it is important for us to keep a watchful eye on whether the elections are free, fair and of international standard. Peter Haas made the remarks in response to a question from reporters at the Decab Talk program at the National Press Club on Tuesday morning. The event was organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Bangladesh (DICAB).
Peter Haas says the United States is committed to upholding human rights and freedom of the media at the center of foreign policy. No discount will be given in this case. He said the United States has raised concerns about democracy and human rights in Bangladesh in public and in private discussions. The United States has said a number of draft laws on the media, including the Digital Security Act, could be used to impede freedom of expression.
